For our young and strong employees the weight of 5-10 lbs per filter wasn't much of a problem. But for many residential customers, who change their own filters, it was difficult for them to hold 10 lbs over their head and place them in ceiling grates. They were even heavier to move around when wet. Our custom filters eliminated that issue.
With hard sided filters, the first complaint we had from homeowners was the NOISE. The metal edging on electrostatic filters caused banging and clacking every time the AC kicked on and off. The only way to reduce this was by putting felt pads on every filter intake, and even that didn't stop all the noise.
Most Hard sided electrostatic filters have sharp corners and/or sharp grating across the front of them to keep them stable. This was a problem not only with homeowners trying to handle or clean them, but it was even a problem for our technicians. They had to wear gloves all the time, and many days they came home with hand cuts. Sonitx line of filters have no sharp edges and are safe for the entire household to handle.
With the exception of one of our suppliers, it was difficult to go back and find the same filters year after year. Most suppliers were just middle men for electrostatic manufacturers, who were here today and gone tomorrow. A "Lifetime guarantee" means little when companies go out of business after a year or two. SONITX has been in business for TWENTY ONE YEARS. We've seen competitors come and go, yet our very first customer is still just a phone call or email away.
It wasn't uncommon to get a surprising email every January with wholesale price increases of 20% or more. Most of that was because of the volatile pricing of the Chinese metal components that went up and down like the stock market. After many years of unpredictable increases, we began the quest on how to make a rigid filter that could have stable pricing, with no connection to overseas metals variations. Sonitx began servicing hard sided filters like you see in the picture over two decades ago. These filters were sufficient, but didn't come without issues we had to deal with as a commercial air filter servicing company.
